OSAlgebra 2 Syllabus

Course Description: This one semester course covers chapters 8-11 of the text. In addition, two days each week will be spent using ALEKS – a computer based tutoring system that allows students to focus on their specific needs. Topics covered include: factoring, the quadratic formula, rational polynomial expressions, and equations with radicals.

 

Expectations: The content we are covering is challenging. To be successful in this class, students will need to do homework each night. They are expected to be in class on time each day, ready to learn, with the following: a completed homework, a sharpened pencil, a math notebook for taking notes and starting homework, and a calculator. Students are expected to ask questions about problems they don't understand. Students are expected to follow school rules and show respect for the learning process.

 

Homework: Homework will be assigned daily, including Fridays, and gone over in class the day after it is assigned. Homework is essential to success in math.  Homework will be collected daily, and will be graded for completeness and process.

 

Tests: An assessment of some sort will be given every 1-2 weeks. Tests will be returned the next class day, therefore, makeup tests will not be given after a test has been returned, except under extreme circumstances. Students returning from an unplanned absence where they missed a test will be expected to take that test on the day of their return. If the absence is planned, they will need to take the test BEFORE they are out.

 

Grading: Marking period grades will be based on home/class work (20%), ALEKS (20%), participation (20%), and tests (40%). The marking period grades will make up 90% of the semester grade. The final will count for the remaining 10%. Marking period grades are cumulative.

 

A standard grading scale will be used:

 

 

Citizenship: A citizenship grade is earned based on 3 criteria: 1)classroom behavior (do you participate, cooperate, adhere to school rules),  2) attendance (absences and tardies), and 3) preparation(bring HW, pencil, notebook). 

 

Attendance: Students are expected to attend class every day. Unexcused absences will result in a 0 for all missed work - even if the missed class had a test.  Excessive absences or tardies will result in phone calls home, and referral to the counseling office.

 

Extra Help: I am available for extra help during my prep period (mods 16-17). Otherwise, you can come to the math office (room 344) to see me or any other math teacher for help. Extra help is also available after school through he Math Club (Thursdays after school in S201) or CSF (see a librarian to sign up for a CSF tutor).
